Honour

is an Officer of very long and meritorious service for which he has received the Imperial Service Order.

Your Honour complains that I have consulted other officers in this matter. I summoned Mr. Seth and Kr.

Kemp in the presence of the Colonial Secretary with a view to ascertaining from them the exact nature of the work on which they were daily engaged and the number of hours it involved per diem. Both have work outside their duties in the Supreme Court and as I had received a statement from Your Honour regarding the Court work it was equally necessary that I should be inform- -ed of the nature and extent of the remainder of their work. As the Head of the Government responsible to the Crown, it is clearly my duty to make the fullest enquiries before suspending any servant of the Crown no matter from whom the request for suspension may emanato.

I understand that Your Honour still desires

a verbal interview on this matter, and that you desire an officer shall be present who has a full knowledge of ante- -cedent correspondence on the subject of the status of the Registrar. If that is so I should be glad to learn whether Friday next at 2.30 p.m. will be a convenient hour to Your

Honour.

The Chief Justice.

I have etc.,

(Sa.) F. D. Lugard,

Governor,&C.•
